I've owned this and it's previous unit (with a back light). I've used both extensively in china to do just what it supposed to do. Does it work, you bet. I'm the guy who travels to China without much language knowledge other then enough to stumble by (i am getting better ).

For the money, this little unit is a gem. Do the the translation as good as units costing 4 times the cost. The real problem and there are a couple. language talking translator

1. Lack of a back light, is a big issue - so much so I can not use it in anything but bright light. That lack of a color display doesn't help
in seeing the screen,
2. Eats batteries.
3. Would be nice to be able to update the unit.

But on the same token, it's cheap, light weight, and gets the job done. I use it as a backup to my new unit. I would recommend the unit as it is good.
If they could just put those few enhancement all would be well.
